Silver’s blog

So there’s a site up for Silver’s blog, The Vicious Circle. While I give the show points for creating it, there could be a lot more there. And isn’t she supposed to be a video blogger? The only video on the site is the one that was in the show of Annie with the cow or whatever.

So.  I may or may not have developed a huge crush on my friend’s brother.  He may or may not be the sweetest and most adorable guy at West Beverly, and I may or may not be a total nerd for blogging about it all.

And yes, I said my friend’s brother.  Is that kinda weird, or no?  It all sounds so teen soap opera.  My sister Kelly says it’s fine, and she claims to speak from experience.  I mean, it could be worse right?  At least I’m not lusting after my friend’s boyfriend.  Contrary to popular belief, I’ve got my scruples in tact.  Somewhat.

OMG HOW META. Also, intact is one word, not two. Too bad this has already been done, and done better, by many other shows…

90210 ep 4: The Bubble

In this episode: Dylan is the daddy; Brenda looks great; Jessica Walter out-acts everyone; and the children make halting progress in their relationships.

Silver is the new Dylan?

In a recent interview with Jessica Stroup, she was asked how her character compared to the characters from the original show. Her reply was quite interesting:

What character from the old show does she correspond to?
Luke Perry [Dylan]. He was a rebel and independent, but he also was tied into the group as a whole and was a huge vital part. I like the idea that, 20 years later, it’s the girl who’s the Luke Perry type. The strong, cool, do-what-she-wants-to-do type girl. It’s girl power.

Well, kind of. Dylan was certainly a rebel and independent. He surfed and had a vintage car and didn’t care about college or typical markers of success and had a raging alcohol and drug problem. And oh yeah, all of that was to cover up his broken heart from having to make his own way in the world and not having any real adult guidance or support and so lashing out against the world. I wouldn’t call him that powerful. And I’m not sure it really would say that much for feminism and “girl power” were Silver’s character really his equivalent.

However, I don’t think Silver is much like Dylan at all. She hasn’t really shown anything out of the ordinary – she has problems with her mom, sure, but her most intense rebellion is that she has a blog! And we all know bloggers are totally intense independent rebels. (I sure am.) Until she stirs up some serious shit – taking Dixon to Mexico, throwing flowerpots at Brenda in the street, skipping her SATs – I don’t find her very Dylan-like at all.

Silver’s cami, Lucky Strike

Dying to wear the big bright pseudo-painted camisole/tunic that Silver was wearing in the Lucky Strike scene of ep 3? You’re in luck – it’s by Hurley and is only $54. It is described by the company as having a “sublimated print sombrero man pattern,” which is not a meaningful phrase.

This info came from Teen Vogue, where they note that this top is affordable, unlike the clothes on Gossip Girl. I’m not sure this is a good thing. There are tons of sites devoted to cataloging and discussing the fashion on GG because it is inspiring and gorgeous. To my knowledge there are no sites dedicated to 90210 fashion, mainly because the only reason one would want information on most of the outfits is to be able to avoid duplicating them.

As an alternative, might I suggest this tunic from Diane Von Furstenberg Spring Ready to Wear?

Outfit check: Silver at Lucky Strike

Ok – let’s see what we have here.

• Tunic thingie with faux artistic rendering of a village or some such. Could be from H&M or Forever 21.
• Legging with a zipper at the ankle. These are actually interesting – exposed zippers are very now, very Lanvin Fall 2008. Not quite as cool as Lindsay Lohan leggings with built in leather knee pads, but ok.
• Geometric bracelet that looks like its in the American Apparel Afrika collection – so it makes sense that it’s showing up on a white, privileged girl with no concept of Africa.
• Pink Cons! Cute.

Overall: hate the tunic and the bracelet, but the rest is pretty ok. Given that she’s homeless (of her own making) and living out of a bag, a good showing. B.

90210 ep 3: Lucky Strike

in this episode: Wilson family demonstrates their strong midwestern values to the envy of hollywood folk; Jessie Spano’s inner pain is revealed before we even have established her as a megabitch; Silver is a wuss and can’t handle some mild Jackie Taylor behavior; and Brenda doesn’t even show up.
