The only meaningful review

October 19, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Ratings, critical reviews, all of that is irrelevant – Randy Spelling likes the new 90210 and he psychically predicts that his father, Aaron Spelling, would have liked it also.

Although Randy believes his dad would “think the show is a little bit risqué, especially considering the nature of the original,” Spelling says, “the old one still dealt with issues like drugs and sex and all that. Now that it’s almost 2009, you have to move the show in a direction that’s more forward. I think if my dad saw the new show he would be happy.”

Well that’s a relief!!

The CW announced that it will pick up 90210 for the full season, so your favorite poorly dressed rich kids will be up to so far PG-13 rated antics for the full year!

Also, they brought in one of the head writers from the Gilmore Girls to run the writers room.

Good spin: the show did not lose any viewers from last week, holding steady at 3.3 million. (That’s still 30% less than the season premiere.)

Bad spin: House premiered last night and got 14.4 million viewers. And people are all atwitter because last season’s premiere got 18.3 million. So the total number who watched 90210 is equal to the number of viewers House lost between season premieres. And House still got over 4 times as many as 90210 after losing them.

Ratings irony

Josie Bissett is on Secret Life of an American Teenager, the show that pummeled 90210 in the ratings this week. Here Josie is on the cover of Baby Couture with her two kids … who were fathered by Rob Estes when he and Josie used to be married after the Melrose Place days.

Apparently she kicked him out of the house to start their divorce proceedings – and now has a more successful show, even though it’s on cable and not a network. Ooops.

Hmm. Apparently 90210 is not doing so well in the ratings. There was a 30 percent drop off from the premiere to this week’s episode – anything abouve 10 or 15 percent is considered cause for alarm.

What’s worse – the mid-season finale of Secret Life of An American Teenager handily beat 90210 in the ratings. Per the Nielsen’s, “Secret Life pulled in 4.5 million viewers vs. 90210’s 3.2 million, beat 90210 by a couple hundred thousand among women 18-34 and doubled 90210 among 12-34 year old females (2.4 million to 1.2 million).”

Secret Life is an enormously stupid and annoying show. It’s made by Brenda Hampton, the person who we can hold responsible for 7th Heaven, and it’s the same kind of insipid moralizing that made 7th Heaven so unbearable. In the world of a Brenda Hampton show, it is always 100% clear to people – well, the people who the show has anointed as moral authorities – what the correct path of action is, and any failure to adhere to that path is nothing less than a failure in the eyes of family and God. In Secret Life, Brenda applies this view of the world to a teenager with an unplanned pregnancy. You can guess the results.

So for that show to beat 90210 – not a great sign.
